WS+B Voices!

  • Dave Davey, ERISA Services Group Practice Leader, co-presented the “Fourth Annual ERISA Fiduciary Checkup” via webinar on January 21 with industry peers David Hudak of Portfolio Evaluations and Howard Levine of Drinker, Biddle & Reath.  Excellent!
  • Barry Horowitz, SALT Partner and Team Leader, presented a session at the Tri-State Taxation Conference on January 21 hosted by the Foundation for Accounting Education (FAE) on “Technical Updates and Planning Ideas for the 2015 Tax Filing Season.”  Barry also had the opportunity to introduce New York City’s Commissioner of Finance, Jacques Jiha.  Well done, Barry!
  • The Healthcare Services Group members have been very busy the past few weeks, doing a tremendous job of demonstrating their thought leadership:
    • Karen Henderson, Senior Manager, and Hayley Shulman, Senior, were published in the Jan/Feb issue of NJ-HFMA’s Garden State Focus with their Finance column on “Final IRC §501(r) Regulations Published in Federal Register.”
    • Scott Mariani, Partner and co-Practice Leader, and Allison Kimowitz, Supervisor, also appeared in that issue with their article, “Annual Form 990 Schedule H Benchmark Report for Tax Year 2011.”  The same article also appeared in the Northeastern New York HFMA chapter’s winter newsletter emailed to all members.
    • Scott, Karen and Hayley presented the monthly Healthcare webinar on February 19 to 96 finance professionals on the topic of “Final IRC §501(r) Regulations Applicable to Tax-Exempt Hospital Facilities.”  Notable accomplishments of this webinar were: 1) it was Hayley’s first presentation ever and she did a tremendous job; 2) the team conducted “Name that Tune” polling questions to warm the spirits of the attendees which went over very well; and 3) the Healthcare niche has officially adopted “Rockin’ Kitty” as their marketing mascot… pending no licensing issues with the use of the graphic. More to come.
    • Jennifer Safeer, Senior Manager, presented the January 22 monthly Healthcare webinar, “Physician Practice Checkup,” sharing how physicians should go about keeping their finances in order.
  • Tony Tuths, Partner and Financial Services co-Practice Leader, and Robert Schachter, Partner, both spoke at the Financial Research Associates (FRA) conference on January 26 and 27.  Tony presented “Taxation of Investment Transactions and Financial Instruments” to a crowd of 50+ finance professionals, and Robert was part of the “Ask the Experts” panel discussion.  Great team work!
  • On January 30, Barry Horowitz and Robert Schachter both presented to the NJSCPA on tax updates for NYS and NYC. Nice!
  • Ed Mendlowitz, Partner and Partners’ Network Founder, was quoted in the February 7 Wall Street Journal article, “Don’t Fall Into a Tax Trap” discussing tax traps when preparing your return.  Ed also presented his 35th Annual Financial Program on February 1 on “Money Secrets of the Rich and Famous” at Congregation Beth Ohr in Old Bridge.  Terrific!
  • Jim Bourke, Partner and Technology niche Practice Leader, was quoted in the February 13 Asbury Park Press article, “Tech company stays here after $33M payday,” discussing Withum client Yashi’s decision to remain in Toms River.  Great thought leadership!
  • Sarah Cirelli, Interactive Marketing Manager, presented at the TCNJ Social Media panel discussion, appropriately titled, “Your Public Face through Social Media,” on February 18.  Rebecca Machinga, Partner and TCNJ Alumnae, was the moderator and organizer of the event.  Rebecca is treasurer and a member of the Executive Committee of TCNJ’s School of Business Advisory Board.  Nice job!
  • Lauren Taguer, Supervisor and active member of the Professional Services – Law Firms niche, will present a session on “Buying & Selling a Small Business” at tomorrow’s NJ State Bar Association 6th Annual Solo and Small-Firm Conference.  Good luck, Lauren!
  • Dave Karakashian was elected President of the D.C. Chapter of the Certified Fraud Examiners. He was also featured in the ACFE Chapter Leader Register, complete with a great photo of him in full ice hockey gear in the article.  Well done, Dave!
  • Please join me in congratulating Andy Vitale, Partner, Red Bank office PIC and all-around wonderful gentleman, who has been selected as the 2015 Chairman’s Award recipient by the NJ-PGA Golf Foundation.  This is a tremendous honor, particularly for someone who has combined business and golf as successfully as Andy has done throughout his career.  He will be honored on August 3rd at the foundation’s annual Golf Classic held at Baltusrol Golf Club.  Congrats, Andy!!
  • Richard Cohen has been selected as a finalist for the 2015 Philadelphia SmartCEO CPA & ESQ Awards.  Nominated by friend of the firm, Marty Abo, we will wait with great anticipation for winners to be revealed at the June 11 event.  Best of luck to you, Richard!
  • WithumSmith+Brown has been selected as this year’s honoree of the Count Basie Theatre annual Summer Gala. Withum has been a long-time supporter of Count Basie Theatre, with board member involvement by Withum partners Larry Thoma from 2002-2013, and Dave Springsteen from 2014 to present.  This is the first time the theatre is honoring a corporate entity, and also the first time the annual gala celebration will be held over multiple days, with the first event scheduled for Saturday, June 20 with a performance by contemporary jazz artist Norah Jones, and a second performance scheduled with legendary rock duo Darryl Hall and Joan Oates on Friday, June 26.  Pretty cool! We are truly honored!
